Preventive Care

Medica offers many preventive services at no cost to our members. It is important to know the difference between covered preventive care services and other services, because it affects how much you pay. Sometimes people are surprised to have unexpected co-pay, deductible or coinsurance costs – because they agreed to receive “non-preventive” care services at the same time they saw the doctor for preventive care.

Covered preventive services typically include:

  • General medical exams
  • Colon, breast and prostate cancer screenings
  • Immunizations
  • Eye exams
  • Bone density screenings

Whoprovides preventive care?

Primarycare providers such asFamily Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology and Pediatrics provide preventive care.

Which types of services are not preventive?

You will typically need to pay for part of the costs for services that are not considered preventive; even if you receive them on the same day you receive preventive care services from your doctor. Examples of non-preventive care services:

  • Earwax removal is defined as a surgical procedure and is not a preventive service
  • Services to diagnose or treat existing symptoms, such as chest X-rays for persistent cough or lab testing for a sore throat
  • Treatment or management of a chronic or ongoing condition
